Dr. Fernandes’ formal education includes post-doctoral work in lipids biohydrogenation at the University of Lisbon and post-doctoral work in small ruminants at the Federal University of Dourados; a Ph.D. in Ruminant Nutrition and Forages from the Federal University of Lavras; M.S. in Ruminant Nutrition and a B.S. in Animal Science from State University of West of Paraná.
Dr. Fernandes joined Virginia Tech as a Post-doctoral Assistant in Hanigan’s Lab in 2022 and then moved to a Research Associate position, where she has been working with isotopic models to evaluate metabolism in lactating animals, emphasizing nitrogen and lipid metabolism. Concurrently, she had developed an extension program to assist underserved farmers with dietary strategies to protect waterbodies and enhance sustainability practices on nitrogen use.
The long-term objective of the work is to improve animal efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of livestock production.
Dr. Fernandes has a primary interest in rumen metabolism and its effect on the regulation of nutrient metabolism in the ruminant and the resulting impact on the environment. It uses an isotopic approach to evaluate animal metabolism and in vitro techniques to evaluate rumen products and the effect of additives.
Dr. Fernandes’ extension program focuses on dietary practices to reduce the environmental effects of livestock production. Associated with that protect the waterbodies from nitrogen contamination.
