  • Dairy Nutrion Physiology

My name is Ana Flavia Souza Lima, and I am originally from Brazil and completed my bachelor's degree in Animal Science from the University of Lavras in 2022. During my undergraduate studies, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Marcos Neves on his research projects, which primarily focused on the nutrition of dairy cows. This experience allowed me to gain hands-on experience both on the farm and in the laboratory, deepening my understanding of the importance of nutrition in dairy cow management.

In 2021, I had an opportunity to come to the United States for an internship at South Dakota State University (SDSU) under the guidance of Dr. Johan Osorio. This experience further expanded my knowledge and skills as I actively participated in various experiments conducted at SDSU. It was a valuable learning experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to the ongoing research at the university.

Currently, I am a Ph.D. student, and I am continuing my research journey alongside Dr. Osorio. My Ph.D. project focuses on studying the impact of prepartal liver glutathione (GSH) on dairy cows during the transition period. The objective of my project is to understand the mechanisms that control liver GSH synthesis and storage in transition dairy cows and assess the effects of prepartal liver GSH concentration on milk performance parameters and cow welfare postpartum. By studying the relationship between liver GSH and milk production, as well as the overall well-being of the cows, we hope to identify potential indicators that can help dairy farmers make informed management decisions and improve the outcomes for both the cows and the industry
